High desert recreation:
Redmond's outdoor connection
If location is everything then for recreational opportunities, Redmond is the place to be for outdoor fun.
It's popular for outdoor recreational enthusiasts for rock climbing, hiking, fishing, rafting, boating, horseback riding and cycling. Smith Rock State Park's red craggy climbing and hiking opportunities along the Crooked River are only 6 miles from city center. The Deschutes River is just a few miles to the west while Crooked River National Grasslands with hiking, biking, horseback and off-road vehicle trails is just a few miles north. Fishing and boating can be enjoyed at Haystack Reservoir and Lake Billy Chinook just 15 minutes out side of town.
As for how Redmond stacks up to Bend, Redmond is only 14 miles north of Bend, but still offers all of the amenities the larger city has to offer along with a small town feel. Real estate prices tend to be a little lower than Bend with lot sizes being a little larger, often giving a home buyer "more house" for their money.
